The BMW E46 M3, produced from 2000 to 2006, features a 3.2-liter inline-six engine (S54), delivering an impressive output of 333 hp at 7,900 rpm and 262 lb-ft of torque at 4,900 rpm. It is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 6-speed SMG automated manual, propelling the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 5.1 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. The car's chassis boasts a double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, ensuring excellent handling dynamics. Weighing around 3,200 pounds, it offers a balanced distribution and a low center of gravity that enhances its agility on the road.

In 2025, one of its German rivals, the Audi RS4 B7, presents a compelling alternative. Manufactured between 2006 and 2008, the RS4 features a 4.2-liter V8 engine producing 420 hp at 7,800 rpm and 317 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm, paired with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed S-tronic dual-clutch transmission. The all-wheel-drive quattro system provides superior traction and stability, contributing to a 0-60 mph time of around 4.6 seconds and a top speed of approximately 174 mph. With an approximate weight of 3,800 pounds, the B7 RS4 offers a more robust driving experience while maintaining competitive performance metrics against the E46 M3.
