BMW E46 M3 (S54B32) rod bearing replacement - DIY guide
Tools needed:
Tools needed:
- Engine hoist and stand
- Torque wrench
- Plastigage
- Various sockets and wrenches
- Remove engine from car
- Disassemble bottom end of engine
- Remove and inspect crankshaft
- Replace rod bearings (consider upgrading to coated bearings)
- Reassemble engine with correct torque specs
- Reinstall engine in car
- Use OEM or high-quality aftermarket bearings
- Check crankshaft for scoring or damage
- Maintain strict cleanliness throughout the process
- Consider replacing other wear items while engine is apart
