DIY guide: Replacing brake pads and rotors on BMW E46 320d (M47D20)

Tools needed:
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Lug wrench
  • Brake caliper piston tool
  • 17mm and 13mm sockets
  • Torque wrench
  • Brake cleaner
  • Anti-seize compound
Procedure:
  • Safely lift and support the vehicle
  • Remove wheels
  • Remove caliper bolts and hang caliper
  • Remove old brake pads
  • Remove and replace rotor
  • Compress caliper piston
  • Install new brake pads
  • Reinstall caliper and torque bolts
  • Repeat for other side
  • Bed in new brakes properly
Recommended parts:
  • Zimmermann or ATE rotors
  • Akebono Euro or Textar brake pads
Note: Always replace brake components in pairs (both front or both rear) for even braking performance.
